3-(1-Pyridino)-1-propane Sulfonate (PPS)

Identification

Synonyms: Pryidinium propryl sulfobetaine; PPS

CAS No.: 15471-17-7

Molecular Weight: 201.3

Molecular Formula: C8H11NO3S

Structural Formula:

m.p.: 280 deg. C (decomposed)

Application

3-(1-Pyridino)-1-propane Sulfonate is a starting material for the manufacture of brightening additives for electroplating Watts bright nickel baths. PPS operates as a highly efficient brightening agent (secondary brightener) and leveling agent. Because of its high purity, PPS does not carry harmful by-products or salts into the galvanic bath. It can be used over long periods of time without any ductility problems. Usually, PPS is combined with saccharin, one or several acetylenic compounds as well as with wetting agents. This procedure leads to leveled, very brilliant and ductile nickel coatings. Also available in free flowing form.
